I never thought I would ever finish this. But lo and behold, I have!
Timir (the one standing) and Cathier battle in the Crown Tournament, a series of games held every few years on Galkalde to determine who will lead as Jhaunn (emperor/king). The tournament is held in the ruins of an ancient city, thus the crumbling landscape.
Cathier is about to call for his right to substitute (bring some poor sod to the field in his place). The circumstances of Cathier's joining the games (despite being low-born) is complicated, so I'm not going to get into it here. Let's just say he's out of his league. Timir is the current Jhaunn and the greatest warrior on Galkalde, save one... His cousin, Alkesh. But she can't compete... Or can she?
